Roman Abramovich has apparently been in talks with the backers of Battersea Power Station about taking control of the site as part of his plans to move the Chelsea FC stadium.

The business tycoon, estimated to be worth £7.2 billion, discussed the possibility of a stadium alongside a shopping complex several months ago.

Amongst the things talked about included a cable car system bringing fans from west to south London.

A Chelsea spokesperson told the Sunday Telegraph: "We have talked to various people with interests in Battersea Power Station, but we haven't had any substantive discussions with anyone with regards to that particular site for several months."

Owners Real Estate Opportunities' (REO) director Rob Tincknell, said Chelsea FC did not fit on the power station site and claimed demolishing the building would lead to a decade-long planning battle.

REO are apparently close to securing a deal with an overseas investor who would buy the debt associated with the £500 million building. But the other main lender Nama and Lloyds banking group have to give this the go ahead, and reportedly prefer the idea of Abramovich taking over.

The latest is that Chelsea FC have employed a developer to look into the possibility of building a stadium just south east of the power station. But they aren't in a financial situation to pay for that as they would need to buy their current stadium from shareholders Chelsea Pitch Owners to have the money. And various people think it's unlike planning approval would be given.
