Future stars of Chelsea FC paid a visit to Battersea Park for the opening of two sports pitches after a £350,000 refurbishment project.

They were welcomed to the park's all weather sports ground by Wandsworth Council's cabinet member for environment and culture, Councillor Jonathan Cook, before playing on the newly-laid artificial grass.

The popular pitches, which have been given a new lease of life, are used throughout the year by footballers, hockey players and local schools.

Cllr Cook said: "The pitches are an extremely valuable asset to the borough, local sports clubs and governing bodies, as there aren't many places in London with two full size pitches together.

"The council has, even in these difficult financial times, been able to invest approximately £350,000 in this refurbishment programme.

"This not only reflects the site's importance to the community and its popularity of use, but also the benefit it provides to the users' health."

The latest investment has been warmly welcomed by all users, including members of Battersea Lions Football Club, Marauders FC and players at London Wayfarer's Hockey Club.

Head coach of Battersea Lions FC, Ricky Hammond, said: "The Battersea Park all weather sports ground is one of the best sporting facilities that I have ever been to.

"The high standard that the facility is maintained at is no doubt down to the vigilant, knowledgeable, approachable, and very pleasant staff."

After a special opening ceremony on December 15, the Chelsea under 16s academy team demonstrated their footballing ability on the new pitches in front of gathered dignitaries and sports enthusiasts.

The up and coming youngsters were put through their paces by former Chelsea favourite and FA and League Cup winner Andy Myers.

Also in attendance were local users Bed Head FC – part of the Guy Mascolo Football Charity – who brought along their full under-10 squad.

Chelsea FC have a long-established relationship with Wandsworth, basing their academy at Battersea Park before moving to facilities in Cobham, Surrey.
