To mark Remembrance Day on Friday 11 November, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home have joined with its neighbours the Chelsea Pensioners to pay tribute to the brave dogs who have served in wars around the world.

Throughout its 151 year history, Battersea has provided dogs to the armed forces and it is immensely proud of their bravery on the front line and in areas of conflict including Iraq and Afghanistan. Battersea dogs played a vital role in both world wars as well as helping the Home Defence effort.

Such is the depth of respect Battersea has for those who have played their part in serving their country that this year the charity has joined up with another much-loved national institution, the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home to the Chelsea Pensioners since 1682. Battersea dogs, volunteers, and staff regularly visit the retired ex-army men and women, providing canine companionship for those who have valiantly played their part in the country's war effort.

On Remembrance Day, Dorothy Hughes, the first ever female Chelsea Pensioner will join Battersea to mark the great work of service dogs at a special ceremony at the Animal War Memorial in London. Dorothy joined the British Army in 1941 and worked as part of 450 Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery. She is now a regular visitor to Battersea, enjoying time spent with the Home's dogs and cats.

Battersea's Deputy Chief Executive Howard Bridges said: "Servicemen, women and dogs have had a special relationship through times of conflict and Battersea is immensely proud of the outstanding contribution our dogs have made throughout our long history.

"Battersea dogs continue to play an active role in the armed forces and we are delighted that our canine companions are now enriching the lives of our brave war veterans, the Chelsea Pensioners."

Battersea rehomes dogs they believe would not be suitable for a normal domestic environment, with service organisations such as the Police and the Ministry of Defence. Later in the day the Home will be welcoming some of these active service dogs onto the red carpet of its major fundraiser Collars & Coats Gala Ball at Battersea Evolution in Battersea Park.
